Guardians of Forever ~ All There Is

Greetings Dear Reader,

Recently, I received a long response to one of my postings from someone objecting to the entire idea that there is a God who interacts with us.  He claims to be a naturalist and that this life is all there is.  I am not going to argue the existence of God here but I am going to address how this relates to guarding forever.

The reason that this matters is the application of faith.  First, I would establish the semantics of my thoughts.  I state atheism as the belief that there is not a God.  This is different from the statement that one does not believe in God. The former says definitively that one believes that no God exists.  The latter can be responded to with an inquiry into which God is being excluded.

For one to claim that God does not exist is a statement of belief.  There must be a leap of faith to make this claim.  One cannot prove that there is no God, no intelligent design, unless one solves the problem of infinite regression.  This is the idea that in order for the natural world to become a reality there must be an infinite series of perfect accidents that lead to the existence of everything. 

The further back we regress this to find a beginning, the more infinitely improbable the maths become.  I believe that it takes greater faith to believe there is not a God than to believe there is.  The sum of it, however, is that to believe there is or is not a God is a leap of faith.  I will not delve into the idea of how Pascal’s Wager plays into this but this is part of the foundation of my faith.

How this all works into my quest to follow Christ is simple.  I am expected not only to believe but to know why I believe.  Part of guarding forever is that my faith is reasonable.  If you wish to listen to are reasonable and intelligent argument for the existence of God, I recommend Richard Swinburn of Edenborough University.  I have met the man and his presentation is not only practical but quite plausible.

Guarding forever is reminding my heart and mind from time to time that my faith is reasonable and sound.  In the flotsam and jetsam of some of the irrational things that some of my fellow followers espouse, there is still the line of truth that we are accepted by the Father through faith alone.  It is our belief that creates the relationship.  It is the Father who extends love and grace to us by asking us to believe.  He leaves the choice to each of us. 

If I am to remain a guardian of that which is eternal, I must accept that the Father is there and that his love for us draws us to him.  I am very careful about accepting the baggage we add to the basic requirement to believe in the Father and follow the Son. What I must not do is to consistently return to the place where I question faith.  I must hold secure in my belief and recall how I arrived at it.  Circumstances and situations do not determine truth.  Faith is required to see that this is not all there is, Dear Reader.  It is by sustaining that faith through the love and grace of the Father that I find my place to stand in guarding my belief that this is not all there is.
