Greetings Dear Reader,
Aragorn is from a broken line of kings. It is not that he is not the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor. It is that the line has not been on the throne for a very long time.
The stewards of Gondor were charged with maintaining the kingdom in Middle Earth until the return of the king. When the time comes, they are neither prepared nor willing to accept Aragorn as king. Denethor, the steward of Gondor chooses foolish resistance to the truth and grasps his bitter power. His treatment of his son Faramir reveals his heart and nature.
This parallel has little waiver to or real story. Jesus is the rightful king of the broken line of David. The Father sees to it that it is true on both sides of his family. He is the rightful king from a human perspective but he is also the divine King.
Further, we like to imagine ourselves as the heroes in the story but we are not. We are the stewards who fail to live out the standards set by the once and future King. We think that the kingdom is ours to do with as we wish. We forget that our constant attitude and prayer must be, “Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
When we allow the line to be seen as broken, we hinder the work of the King. We do not provide good stewardship over the kingdom. We forget that it is to be seen daily in us by our love for each other. It is to be spread quietly and humbly by the stewards by their kindness and grace to others. As Gandalf noted, it is the simple kindnesses we do that hold back the darkness.
We are the light of the world. We are intended to be the fires that call all to the Kingdom. The line of the King may appear broken, Dear Reader. It only seems that way. We can establish a bit of it wherever we go when we love and live like Jesus. The Kingdom mysteriously grows wherever Christ-followers live in the light of the King. That is our first, best destiny. It may not seem good today but the King returns.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
