Greetings Dear Reader,
When we first meet Aragorn, he is swarthy and dark. Tolkien does a brilliant job of making us mistrust him at first. The first disarming thing we learn is that he carries a broken sword, Narsil. Narsil is the sword that was used to cut the One Ring from the hand of Sauron at the end of the Second Age.
In his letter of introduction to Frodo, Gandalf uses these lines to tell the Hobbits about Aragorn:
“All that is gold does not glitter,Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes, a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
I could find a jumping-off point in every line of this, however, I must focus on that which is at hand. What I wish to ponder is the broken sword. It is a symbol of the true nature of our Ranger in the story. It is an easy transition to the only thing in our arsenal that is a sword. I make reference to the armor I spoke of before. When Paul tells us and the Ephesians how we equip ourselves, he tells us to take up the “Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of Truth.”
I ponder often how much value the Word of God has but has been lost to the common man. People do not like what the Bible says about a topic so they reject it so they may do as they please. We all do this to some degree whether it is twisting the Word to our liking or outright rejecting of its authority. We make the Word of God into a broken sword that fits our theology or lack thereof.
The difficulty with this is that the Word of God has its own intrinsic authority and viability. We do not grant these things. They are true whether or not we embrace them. The fault is in us and not the weapon. I must be certain to reforge this truth in my life every day. The writer of Hebrews tells us that the Word is alive and powerful and sharper than any sword.
This is the weapon we are given. It is the one our King wielded when he taught us. We have no unbroken sword to reforge but we must not treat the one we have as if it were broken, Dear Reader. It is our weapon to serve the King in fixing other broken things. With the sword, therefore in hand, we will ponder these things tomorrow.
Wishing you joy in the journey,
