Three Hallowed Days ~ The Cloud

Greetings Dear Reader,

Recently I overheard an older couple discussing the cloud at a diner.  The man was explaining to his wife that it is not a literal cloud.  He went on to say that it was a collection of giant computers that held all the information.  Thus far, he was correct if a bit off-center.

She asked him where the computers were.  His answer made me choke on my coffee.  He told her that the computers are all in space.  That is why there are so many satellites and why we have to hire the Russians and Elon Musk to fly them up there.

The world is surrounded by satellites but that is not what is meant by cloud computing.  Today, under the second day of the blue moon we celebrate another type of cloud.  It too is misunderstood by many.  In his letter to the Hebrews, the writer expresses that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses.  With no disrespect to my friends who venerate some Christ-followers as more holy than others, I am speaking of the idea that each of us is saints and is to be celebrated on All Saints Day.

We are not alone.  Jesus is real and we have a vast cloud of those who are fellow-travelers in following him.  We have no reason for our roadblocks and failures to hold us back.  We get to be a part of the long line of those who have followed Jesus since he first called some ill-equipped fishermen, publicans, and vine-dressers to become his disciples.

Before that, we have the legacy of Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and David.  We have all who have chosen to love the Father over everything else.  We see their failures.  We are witnesses to their journey.  It is in this beautiful company that we are asked to follow Christ.  Every one of them matters.  Every one of them chose to believe and follow.

As we round the corner into the last two months of the year, we draw closer to the day we celebrate the incarnation of our redemption.  As I do this, I wish to celebrate the many saints who have come before me.  I wish to honor those with whom I travel now.  No matter what our differences, our bond in Christ unites us and always should trump any social or political position we hold.

It is our love for each other in every circumstance that must dominate our conversation and congress.  Everyone who follows Christ is my friend, Dear Reader, even the ones I have not met yet.  Each of us has a uniqueness that is our own.  It is my joy to embrace the being that is you as someone to love and respect.  There is nothing more important in my interaction with other humans.  In that space is where I celebrate the singular beauty of every saint and their place under the blue moon as one of a kind in all of time.  That is the purpose of this cloud that surrounds us.  It gives us the opportunity to see and to love.  For me, that is a great comfort.

Wishing you joy in the journey,
