Happy Christmas Dear Reader,
What did you write down yesterday? I am curious to know. If you choose not to share it that is just
fine. It is my love for you that asks
and nothing else.
I ponder Luke’s words as I ponder what Mary thought about after the annunciation. I put down much of my thoughts on this in The Foster Father of God. My focus here is on Mary, not Joseph.
I wonder if we can join her in her search for order in life
when things are suddenly so out of order.
The annunciation changes her life; puts it in danger. She could be stoned to death by her own people. We do not know what Mary knew. Still, every expectant mother wants safety and
order for her child.
Then order arises out of a chaotic world. An angel tells Joseph that all is good. Elizabeth carries John who is the first person
to recognize the Messiah. I long to
understand that communication between wombs.
Then there is what Luke tells us. “And it came to pass in those days that there
went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.” Even the Roman Emperor decided that there
needed to be ordered in the PAX Romana. He
was registering the world.
All of this works together to bring Mary to Bethlehem. We wonder what Mary pondered and what she
knew. We must recall that the common
thought in Israel was that Messiah would come as a conquering king to destroy
the enemies of God’s people. It is
likely that she did not foresee the way things would turn out many years down
the path.
Still, her desire was to be the servant of the Father. She pondered all of this in her heart. She will later forget who her Son is and
think he has gone mad. Today, however,
we look through the eyes of a young girl who has just been told that the Son of
God lives insider her. Today, we can see
through her desire for order that she will give up what is “proper” to have
what is good and what meets the needs of the world.
Perhaps our own hearts can use a reminder that right is not
always what is proper. I need to remember
that good is not always cloaked in the traditional and the familiar. The world will not see it without my living
it out. During this time of chaos,
perhaps you and I can find something to write down that reminds us that the
Father has it all ordered now just as he did then. I would love it if you shared your thoughts
with me, Dear Reader.
Mary,
Did you Know – Pentatonix
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on
water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and
daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a
blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with
his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels
trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God
Mary, did you know, Mary did you know, Mary did you know
The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will
live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the
lamb
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all
creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the
nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I AM
Mary, did you know, Mary did you know, Mary did you know
Wishing you joy in the journey,

“And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of
Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem;
(because he was of the house and lineage of David); To be taxed with Mary his
espoused wife, being great with child.”
