Be Born in Me ~ The Journey Home

Happy Christmas Dear Reader,

What did you write down yesterday? Love must permeate everything if we hope to journey well. It must be the journey that gets our attention. We are travelers here but we also dream of home and a place to be.

I know that early in the year my plans were to be elsewhere for Christmas. That is not how things unfolded for me but the missing of people is also the acceptance of what the Father has planned for me. I know that many are experiencing the same thing. First, hear clearly that I care about your situation.

No matter where you have to be, that is also where you are meant to be this year. I know it takes faith to see that and that it may sound puerile in saying it. Still, the Father does direct our steps. We are following the Son. The journey to our real home is always in process.

Mary did not want to be on the road to Bethlehem. Her family was in Nazareth. The entire world was at peace and in turmoil all at once. I do not believe the drama we add that she was giving birth as they arrived in Bethlehem. It says “while they were there, the days were completed for her to deliver.” Still, she was not in a house, a home, or even a hotel room. She was in a cattle shed; a sheep crib. The Father knew the journey that was hers and was in every moment of it.

If we presume that Mary is already there, we can also presume that the little town was busier than we understand. We are able to comprehend that this place is just a stop on the journey for her. It was likely that the plan was to register for the census and return home to Nazareth. Instead, the family will go to Egypt in a couple of years, be there until Herod dies, then return north.

Even for the mother of Jesus, the journey does not unfold as wished or expected. The journey is still what matters. I wish to sit with her in Bethlehem and share her worry, fear, joy, and wonder. Things are about to become very supernatural again. Perhaps that too is thinking I must adjust. It is not natural versus supernatural. It is common for me versus common for God. It is the Father who causes all things to be as they are.

In the stable, in Bethlehem, in the fullness of time, the Son is coming. I am determined to write down my commitment to the journey no matter where it leads. Where it leads is where Christ is for me. It is where I can find him in the moment; in each grain as it slips through the pinch of the glass. Let us sit with this family for a while, Dear Reader. We can observe their time in this little town and further learn how to follow the Son more closely. We can find the joy that we are given freely in every circumstance if we allow it. This will further our ability for Christ to born in us. It will allow the peace we need. More on that peace this evening.

Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem — Sarah McLachlan

O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie.
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light.
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary,
And, gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
The morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of his heaven.
No ear may hear his coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him, still
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born in us today.
The Morning Stars together
The great glad tidings tell
Oh, come to us abide with us
Our Lord Immanuel

Wishing you joy in the journey,
